Join the movement... celebrate and support Made in Britain.
We take a look at the economic, social and environmental benefits of buying British-made:
1. QUALITY
There is a growing demand worldwide for products with a 'Made in Britain' label which is now seen as a badge of quality. Many products, for example oven gloves, will not only include 'Made in Britain' but also have the British Standards code on the care label which is recognised and trusted worldwide. British manufacturers are able to access their products at any point during production process, ensuring regular quality checks at each stage. They’re passionate about their goods and make sure each item is finished to equally high standards.
2. LEAD TIMES + TRENDS
British-made goods generally have much faster turnaround times. Products have shorter distances to travel and are often dispatched on a next day delivery. This means the wait for customers is greatly reduced and designers are able to react quicker to current trends.
3. THE ENVIRONMENT
Brands are able to visit their manufactures regularly and ensure that their ethical, environmental and work place policies are in line with British standards. The shorter delivery distances result in a lower carbon footprint per product compared to their equivalent made overseas and many UK manufactures are conscious about their impact on the environment and use environmentally friendly inks and materials in their production.
4. SHORTER SUPPLY CHAINS + PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
When products are both designed and manufactured in Britain the designer is able to work directly with the manufacture enabling them to gain a better understanding of the desired final product. At the same time they get to know the story behind the brand which creates a more personal experience.
5. FLEXIBILITY + BESPOKE
Companies who design and manufacture in the UK have the ability to offer bespoke services, quickly and easily working through design ideas and make adjustments directly with clients and suppliers. It's possible to go from idea to the shop floor within a matter of weeks! Minimum order quantities are often smaller when manufacturing within the UK which is ideal for bespoke ranges, along with helping small businesses and budding entrepreneurs to start and grow without huge investment.
6. SUPPORTING THE BRITISH ECONOMY
Buying British helps to support the UK economy helping British employment and entrepreneurs, strengthening local communities, boosting innovation, maintaining traditions and preserving the UK’s heritage.
Shoppers are becoming more and more aware of how ethical their purchases are urging brands and shops alike to respond with more responsibly sourced products. In 2013 John Lewis and Marks and Spencer were already supporting the British-Made movement with John Lewis aiming to increase its sales of UK-made products by 15 per cent in the next two years, while Marks and Spencer launched a "Best of British" range.*** We know that shoppers want to make informed decisions about what they buy and are interested in the origin, story and sustainability of these products. Coming back to the fact that 'Made in Britain' is a stamp of quality.
